South Narrows Picnic Area & Narrows Rim Trail

The South Narrows Picnic Area and Narrows Rim Trail in El Malpais National Conservation Area is 21 miles south of I-40 along NM Hwy 117, east of Grants. The picnic area is a great place to have a barbeque in the shade of a covered shelter and sandstone cliffs. The Narrows Rim Trail is a moderate, 7.6-mile round-trip hike that takes you to the top of a sandstone mesa where you can enjoy spectacular views of unique lava flows, the famous La Ventana Natural Arch, and the vast surrounding landscape.
