Fort Craig National Historic Site

Nestled in Socorro County along the Rio Grande is the Fort Craig Historic Site. Founded in 1854, Fort Craig played a critical role in frontier campaigns and the American Civil War. The Battle of Valverde, the largest Civil War battle in the Southwest, was fought near here. The Fort is associated with many well-known Native American figures, including Victorio, Nana and Geronimo, as well as Kit Carson and the famous Buffalo Soldiers.
