Lake Valley Backcountry Byway

A meandering 48-mile drive on paved roads takes you along the foothills of the Black Range through ranching and mining country and the ruins of the 1880s town of Lake Valley. Beginning off I-25 about 25 miles south of Truth or Consequences, this is a fantastic trip for travelers with an hour to spare. Visit the ghost town of Lake Valley with a restored schoolhouse and chapel, and for lunch head to Hillsboro, an inhabited town as old as Lake Valley. Be prepared! There is no gas along the byway.
